Water service line replacement means replacing the buried pipe that carries drinking water from the municipal main to a building. In Canada the utility usually owns the part from the main to the property line or curb stop and the owner owns the rest. Common reasons are lead or galvanized pipe, leaks, freezing and low flow; the new line is usually copper, polyethylene or PEX, laid in a trench or pulled in trenchlessly. ## Guides ### Basics - [What is a water service line?](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/what-is-a-water-service-line/): What a water service line is: the corporation stop, curb stop, service pipe, main shut-off and meter, how deep it runs, its size and who owns it. - [Who pays for water line repair: the city or the homeowner?](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/who-pays-for-water-line-repair/): Who pays for a leaking or broken water service line in Canada: where the utility side ends, leaks, freezing, lead programs and home insurance. ### Frost - [Frost depth and your water service line](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/water-line-frost-depth/): How deep water service lines are buried in Canadian cities, why frost goes deeper under driveways, signs of a freezing service, and lasting fixes. ### Lead - [How to identify a lead water pipe](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/how-to-identify-a-lead-water-pipe/): How to tell if your water pipe is lead: where to look, what lead looks like, the scratch and magnet tests, joints, utility records and why to test. - [Lead service line replacement: doing both sides, in the right order](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/lead-service-line-replacement/): How a lead water service is replaced in Canada: full vs partial, the four ways cities coordinate both sides, the work day, flushing and testing. - [Lead water service lines: are they dangerous, and what should you do?](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/lead-water-service-lines/): Lead water pipes in Canadian homes: when they were used, why they matter most for children and pregnancy, whether they are legal, what to do. - [Testing your tap water for lead](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/testing-water-for-lead/): How to test tap water for lead in Canada: free city testing, how samples are taken, what µg/L results mean against the guideline, and filters. ### Materials - [Galvanized water lines: why they fail and when to replace them](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/galvanized-water-line-replacement/): Galvanized steel water lines: how they corrode shut, the warning signs, the lead they can hold, and replacing the service and house piping in order. - [Poly-B (polybutylene) water piping: keep it or replace it?](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/poly-b-water-line/): Poly-B water piping in Canadian homes: how to identify it, why fittings matter, Calgary's advice on pressure and heat, insurers, and replacement. - [Copper, PEX or polyethylene for a new water service line](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/water-service-pipe-materials/): Choosing pipe for a new water service in Canada: type K copper, polyethylene and PEX compared on joints, thawing, trenchless use, size and code. ### Pressure - [Low water pressure in the whole house: what causes it and how to find it](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/low-water-pressure-in-house/): Why a house has low water pressure: valves, pressure-reducing valves, galvanized scale, the service line, leaks, softeners, frost and the city. - [Pressure-reducing valves: lowering high water pressure, and what goes wrong](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/water-pressure-reducing-valve/): What a pressure-reducing valve does, when the code requires one (550 kPa), how to tell if it is failing, lowering house pressure, expansion tanks. ### Replacement - [Trenchless water line replacement: four ways to skip the trench](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/trenchless-water-line-replacement/): Trenchless water service replacement: pulling the old line out, splitting or bursting it, moling and small directional drilling, risks and pits. - [Replacing a water service line, step by step](https://watermainreplacement.ca/guides/water-line-replacement-process/): The water service replacement process: records, city programs, quotes, permits, locates, the curb stop, main shut-off, testing and restoration. ## Tools, costs and reference - [Water service line replacement cost in Canada](https://watermainreplacement.ca/costs/water-line-replacement-cost/): What replacing the water line from the street to your house costs in Canada: published city figures, per-metre pricing, cost drivers, grants and loans. - [Lead Water Line Check](https://watermainreplacement.ca/tools/lead-water-line-check/): Is your water service line lead?
